An auditor compares a company's books against those of a bank, broker, creditor or anyone else who has financial dealings with the company. Auditors are also trained to spot inefficiencies and duplication of effort, thereby helping management cut costs. The position of auditor may be divided into two basic types; internal and external auditor. External auditors, sometimes also known as independent auditors, work for public accounting firms or work independently. It is standard practice for businesses and governments to contract with auditors to verify their financial statements. An external audit of large companies is necessary to give investors confidence in the financial condition of a company. External auditors usually examine a company's books at the location of the company. Internal auditors are hired by a company to examine financial records as well as to track accounting methodology with a view to maximize efficiency.

Generally, external auditors have a higher education than internal auditors, although this is not always the case. Public accounting firms usually require auditors to pass the Certified Public Accountant exam, which is a standardized test used by all states and issued by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. The exam is notoriously difficult and has a pass rate of only 25 percent. Once certified, an auditor has an enormous field of opportunity.
